How We Keep Saturday Sweets Safe

Yes. Saturday Sweets is a licensed Minnesota Cottage Food Producer. To become licensed, I was required to complete food-safety training and demonstrate an understanding of safe food handling, sanitation, and kitchen cleanliness. As a licensed cottage food producer, I am accountable to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, which issues and oversees cottage food licenses.

Food safety is something I take very seriously.

Saturday Sweets has a dedicated pantry, containers, mixing bowls, cleaning products, sponges, towels, and other supplies that are used specifically for bakery production. This separation is part of my food-safety practices.

Furthermore, I also happen to have a gluten allergy, so I understand firsthand what can happen when a food is incorrectly labeled gluten-free or an ingredient comes into contact with gluten. My husband can eat wheat, but we do not prepare foods containing gluten in our kitchen and have not done so since I was diagnosed approximately eight years ago. I am exceptionally attentive to the ingredients, preparation, and handling practices involved in every Saturday Sweets bake.

Before Every Bake

Before production begins, the kitchen is closed off and prepared specifically for Saturday Sweets.

Every work surface is thoroughly cleaned and sanitized. Floors are cleaned as well. Dedicated bakery equipment and supplies are used throughout production. Hair is pulled back before the baking begins.

Ingredients are also purchased regularly to fulfill weekly orders, which means our flours, sugars, and specialty ingredients are kept fresh rather than sitting in the pantry for months at a time.

What Does “Homemade” Mean?

Minnesota's Cottage Food Law allows licensed producers to prepare and sell certain foods from a home kitchen. Because Saturday Sweets operates under this law, our products are required to be labeled as homemade and are not produced in a kitchen subject to routine state inspection.

That distinction is important. But "homemade” does not mean “made without food-safety requirements.” Licensed cottage food producers are required to meet Minnesota's food-safety requirements and complete the required training.

The cottage food community in Minnesota and country-wide is growing quickly, and I think that's a wonderful thing. It gives small food businesses the opportunity to make thoughtfully prepared food with real, recognizable ingredients and share it with their communities.

But the cottage food landscape can be confusing for consumers. Not everyone selling food from a home kitchen is necessarily operating under a cottage food license.

Before purchasing from any cottage food business, take a moment to learn who you're buying from. Look for licensing information, understand the applicable state requirements, and don't be afraid to ask questions about food safety and preparation practices.

At Saturday Sweets, you should always feel comfortable asking.

Why Isn't Saturday Sweets Gluten-Free Certified?

Because Saturday Sweets is not a certified gluten-free commercial bakery.

Gluten-free certification programs generally apply to commercial food manufacturers, wholesale products, and commercial food facilities. Saturday Sweets operates differently: we are a licensed Minnesota Cottage Food Producer, which means we are a home-based cottage/micro bakery rather than a wholesale or commercial bakery.

Under Minnesota's Cottage Food Law, our products are considered homemade and are not produced in a state-inspected commercial kitchen.

You may also notice that I don't describe Saturday Sweets as a “gluten-free kitchen.” That's intentional. While we have not prepared foods containing gluten in our kitchen for approximately eight years, I don't want to use terminology that could imply a formal certification or designation that we do not hold.

What I can tell you is exactly how we operate.

Saturday Sweets does not prepare foods containing gluten in our kitchen.  We use dedicated bakery supplies and follow careful cleaning, sanitation, ingredient-handling, and production practices for every bake.

So while Saturday Sweets is not gluten-free certified, every product we sell is made gluten-free.

How do I place an order?

How much notice do I need?

Current pastry box and pre-order availability are on the homepage of the site.

For master batches a lead time of four days (or 96 hours) is required. If your total order is under $100 (personal delivery is not available to you), and you've ordered on Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday by 11:00 am your master batch will be available for pick-up that coming Saturday. However, if you have ordered after 11:00 am on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday your master batch will not be available for pick-up until the Saturday of the following week.

If you qualify for personal delivery based on a purchase of $100.00 or more in one transaction, pastry boxes will be delivered on the Saturday they would normally be picked up. Delivery will occur only on Saturday after 12:00 p.m. If you're not home, item will be placed outside your location. If you ordered only master batches, delivery will be provided the 5th day after the four day window (excluding Sundays). If you ordered a combination of pastry boxes and master batches both the above parameters apply to your order.

Don't worry! It may sound confusing. If you have a delivery of $100.00 or more in one transaction you'll receive an email from Saturday Sweets for clarity so we are all on the same page.

Where and when is pickup?

Available pickup choices appear during checkout. The confirmed location, date, and time will be included with your order details. Pick-up time is limited between 11:00 am and 12:00 pm. Any pastry boxes remaining after the designated pick-up time will be deemed relinquished and will become the property of Saturday Sweets. Therefore, make sure you (or a friend or family member) can pick-up your box at the location and time specified before ordering.

Do you offer delivery or shipping?

As of September 15, 2026 Saturday Sweets does provide personal delivery on all orders totaling $100 or more, provided your delivery location is within Minneapolis/St.Paul city limits or their surrounding first tier suburbs. Minneapolis first tier suburbs for delivery purposes are: Richfield, Edina, St. Louis Park, Golden Valley, Robinsdale, Crystal, Columbia Heights, and Hopkins. St. Paul first tier suburbs for delivery purposes are: North, South and West St. Paul, Maple Wood, Mendota Heights, Roseville, Falcon Heights and Little Canada.

These parameters are required for corporate deliveries as well.

Shipping is currently prohibited within the State of Minnesota under Minnesota's applicable cottage food laws, until mid 2027. At that time Saturday Sweets will revaluate whether it adopt shipping.

Saturday Sweets does not ship outside of Minnesota.

No. Because Saturday Sweets Bakery does not accept custom orders, changes are not available nor are cancellations.

Each pastry listed on the website has its ingredient and allergen information. Each pastry box contains ingredient and allergen information as required by Minnesota law as well. However, if you have questions about either, please contact us BEFORE ordering if you need clarification about a specific item. We'll be happy to answer any questions!

Are pastry boxes replaceable and refundable?

All purchases are non-refundable. Pastry boxes are replaceable for the following week ONLY IF they appear to be spoiled upon pick-up (if you believe this has happened please contact Saturday Sweets immediately). After pick-up it's impossible for Saturday Sweets to know how boxes are handled after delivery. It is your responsibility to take care of your pastry items as instructed.

How do I store my pastries?

Pastries are best if kept at a comfortable room temperature. If the room temperature is not comfortable for you, it will not be good for your pastries.

Your pastries should be kept in an air tight container.  If they are not they are subject to spoilage faster.

Never leave your pastries in a hot vehicle (during the summer) or any other place with concentrated heat.

Keep your pastries out of direct sunlight.

Saturday Sweet pastries do not be refrigerated. Please note, if you do decide to refrigerate your pastries realize that refrigeration will not only dry out your pastries but also alter the flavor profile.

How do I cut my master batch?

Find a sharp steel knife whose blade covers the full length of batch. Run the knife blade under very hot water. Take a towel wiping the top half of the blade dry but leaving the lower, sharp half somewhat wet. Make one clean cut through the master batch. Lift the blade up confidently, but not too slowly or quickly from the batch. You should have a clean cut. Between each cut run your knife under the hot water to remove the batch residue. Then repeat the above for each cut, until you have the number of squares you desire. DO NOT use a serrated knife.
